John Hobbs
John is both a visual artist and ceramicist, painting in oils on canvas and watercolour on paper, making digital works and crafting unique ceramic pieces.
John sees painting and ceramic work as part of the same story; from raw material – be it canvas, paint or clay – something wonderful can evolve and come to life.
John says, “I’ve always drawn, designed things, made things and worked things out on paper. Art is a more powerful language to me than words. I love to use my hands to make, shape and create.”
For John finding ceramics was a revelation, building up an inverse sculpture with the soft clay as opposed to chiselling one out of a hard material. He says, “From a piece of clay something can be actualised right there in real time. A wonderful and exciting hands-on process in the truest sense offering limitless possibility.
John aims to make his ceramic pieces as beautiful as a painting. Each piece is made with great care, crafted as a piece of living sculpture to be both loved and used.
